Green Funerals

Green or ecological funerals have become increasingly popular in recent years, as awareness has grown from television and newspaper articles.

Our dedication in providing a truly unique service extends to ecological funerals including burials in a woodland setting as well as a cremation using natural coffins.

Living in this area, we are fortunate to have the award wining South Downs Natural Burial Site located close to us near the village of East Meon. The Natural Burial Site lies in a peaceful and secluded corner of The Sustainability Centre. It is bordered by woodland creating a true sense of privacy whilst still having stunning views across Hampshire on a clear day.

The woodland is worked as a coppice to ensure a rich bio-diversity, encouraging wildlife, flora and fauna. In keeping with the South Downs Natural Burial Site ethos, each grave is prepared by hand to minimise any impact to the area. The coffin is conveyed to the graveside using either a hand drawn bier or a horse-drawn cart.

While no permanent headstone or grave markers are allowed, the location of each grave is meticulously plotted and recorded.

The ceremony itself can take place in the indoor service room, the beautiful outdoor woodland room or at the graveside for both religious or celebration of life services. For families who wish to deliver their own service, a funeral celebrant can draw the ceremony together whilst allowing the family to create their own unique tribute to their loved one.

Those attending with limited mobility are cared for by using a 4x4 vehicle to convey them to the graveside.

Woodland settings also offer a more relaxed rite of passage with families and family often taking a more involved role within the funeral service.

We are able to provide as much or as little support as you wish and our 'Itemised Funeral Charges' provides the individual cost for each service.

In keeping with the woodland ethos, we offer different styles of coffin made from natural sustainable materials such as untreated pine and oak, woven willow or bamboo, seagrass and cardboard.

We would be pleased to take you to visit the Natural Burial Site and introduce you to the manager, Mr Al Blake and his assistant Mr Charlie Kimber.

Many families have found great comfort in laying their loved one to rest with natural and simple dignity.
